Shell Craft

I’m sorry, but who can’t resist a good pun? But this is about how you can turn something natural - like a seashell, and turn it into a magical tool. Being an elemental witch, a water sign and a Cancerian, I am always drawn to the water. I didn’t fully realise it until I was away from it for a year in the middle of the US - fully landlocked.

I am lucky enough now to live by the water and I’ve always loved a nice long walk and I am a bit of a collector.  (Many jars….many many jars). My poor husband gets driven mad by it! (Sorry Luke!)

As an element Water is all about emotions and reflection. It reminds us to go with the flow and trust our intuition. It can be used as a way to help control your emotions - simply putting water on your wrist can help you to calm down. Water is connected to the moon and therefore gives off feminine energy. We can celebrate this element as simple as having a bowl of water or shell on your altar. If you can visit the Ocean and listen to the waves crash upon the shore and experience the raw power of water - but admittedly in this day and age, we need something nice and simple.

This is why I love to preserve shells and turn them into something to give them a new lease of life.

When collecting my shells the number 1 rule is to not pick up a closed shell - someone still lives there! Always double-check they are empty. A lot of the shells I collect are bleached white but you’d be surprised how much colour can come out with a little bit of love. I look for interesting shapes and for ones with natural holes that can be used as necklaces.  The best thing is you can just make it a fun family activity out in nature!
